If you know anything about me, you know I’m an avid listener to Billie Eilish. I’ve liked her music since her first hit, Ocean Eyes, but I didn’t start to love it till she released her stellar debut album, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? On April 29th, Billie released her new single, Your Power. A powerful ballad to an ex, she asks seriously heart-wrenching questions like “Will you only feel bad if they find out? If you could take it all back, would you?”
The song apparently references a relationship she was in when she was 16 years old and was dating a 22 year old. The abuse of the situation itself by taking advantage of a child is different compared to her other work. When I listen to Billie Eilish, it never makes me emotional so for her to switch it up like this is amazing. I do love her hype music but I think the vulnerable side looks good on her. Especially since abuse (among minors especially) is not often talked about in music.
Her music video is also just as powerful featuring her sitting on a cliff while a snake (a literal predator) slowly wraps itself around her and chokes her. Billie is known to create the ideas for her own music videos. The imagery in this one is phenomenal.
It’s safe to say that I’m super hyped for her new album which is set to release July 30th 2021. Be on the lookout for that and more singles. I’m hoping she’ll give us at least one more song before the album. Fingers crossed.
